What is this all about?

Business Planning

There is an old saying “Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail”.

Business planning is one of those things that is often neglected as owners are too busy working ‘in’ the business to work ‘on’ the business.

A good business plan will outline your reason to be, the problems you’ll be solving for your customers and clients, set out your future goals and strategies to reach them.

It will be a ‘living’ document that motivates your and keeps you accountable: “You can’t manage what you can’t measure”.

Projects

You run a business but you’re not a project manager…. or are you?

We’re all project managers in our home lives. Organizing a party, going on holiday, moving house, planning a wedding – these are all ‘projects’.

In business, we have ‘Business as Usual’ (BaU), plus we have projects, irregular/infrequent activities or events:

  • product launches
  • market research
  • adopting new technology
  • an advertising campaign
  • new premises etc.

However, our expertise is usually the BaU, not the project side of things.

As such, projects often run over time, over budget, miss targets, and generally cause stress – sometimes even fail altogether wasting time, money and effort. Sound familiar?

You can reduce the risks of poor planning and lack of project experience by studying the Diploma in Small Business and Project Management (Level 5)

  • learn project management techniques and apply these to projects within your business (If you don’t have a business yet you can apply the learning to preparing to launch a business)
  • Execute and monitor your projects as part of the programme

Hi, I’m Mike, your Kaiako/tutor.

I’ve been a self-employed contractor teaching classes for Te Wananga o Aotearoa since 2015, and have delivered dozens of classes to hundreds of students.

My working history includes retail ownership/management, marketing, operations and finance management, and personal development facilitation. This has given me a grounding in a range of commercial experiences.
When I’m not prepping, teaching, mentoring or marking for my courses, my interests include property investment & development, the alternative energy sector, working out, crime fiction, electric scooter rides and whanau sports & activities. I also work as ‘the sound guy’ for a band, though that’s more of a hobby! I’ve also been known to enjoy a nice NZ sauvignon blanc.

I have a Masters in Business Administration (Curtain University), a Diploma in Adult Education L5 (Te Wananga o Aotearoa) and a Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy L5 (Manukau Institute of Technology).

My company Mcorla Services Limited is all about Helping People and Organisations Achieve Their Goals.
